How to Choose a Weight Bench: Flat, Adjustable or Olympic

After a pair of dumbbells, a bench is the piece that adds the most to a home gym. It turns a few weights into chest presses, shoulder presses, rows and dozens of other exercises. The hard part is that benches look alike online and cost anywhere from under $100 to over $1,000. The right one depends on one question: will you train mostly with dumbbells, or with a barbell?

The short answer

  • Training with dumbbells: get an adjustable bench.
  • Bench pressing with a barbell, alone, on a budget: get an Olympic bench with a built-in bar rack.
  • Short on space and money, and only doing flat work: a flat bench is enough.
  • Already own a squat or power rack: an adjustable bench that rolls in and out of the rack is the most useful choice.

Adjustable benches

The back pad moves from flat to incline, so one bench covers flat presses, incline presses, seated shoulder presses, one-arm rows, curls and more. If most of your training is with dumbbells, this is the one to buy. You get far more exercises per dollar than with any other kind.

Our CAP adjustable weight bench ($164.99) has an all-steel frame, plus wheels and a handle so you can move it out of the way. It takes up about 53 x 27 inches of floor space and weighs 45 lb.

Olympic benches

An Olympic bench has uprights that hold a barbell, so you can bench press without buying a separate rack. Many, including ours, also have a leg attachment at the front. That makes it a good all-in-one station for someone who wants to do barbell work on a budget.

Our Olympic bench press with leg extension ($169.99) has a height-adjustable bar rack, a 4-position back pad for flat and incline pressing, and a leg developer for leg extensions and leg curls. It's built for a 7 ft Olympic bar.

The catch is room. The bench itself is about 65 x 48 inches, and a 7 ft bar needs about 9 ft of clear width once you allow space to load plates. Measure first.

Flat benches

A flat bench has no moving parts, so it's simple, cheap and solid. It's fine if you only want flat presses and rows, but you give up incline and seated work. For most home gyms, we think an adjustable bench is worth the extra money. We don't carry flat benches in our store right now, because our adjustable bench also sets flat.

What to check before you buy any bench

Weight rating

Add up your body weight and the heaviest weight you'll lift. A 180 lb person pressing a pair of 60 lb dumbbells puts 300 lb on the bench. Leave room to grow. If a listing doesn't give a rating, ask.

Stability

The base should be wide enough that the bench doesn't rock when you lie down or lift dumbbells into place. This is the best reason to try a bench in person: sit on it, lie back, and push on it from the side.

Pad and gap

Look for firm padding that doesn't let you feel the frame. On adjustable benches, check the gap between the seat and back pads, since a wide gap can be uncomfortable when you're lying flat.

Height

You want your feet flat on the floor when you press. Benches are usually around 17 inches high, which works for most people. Shorter lifters should check this in person.

Adjustments

Check how the back pad locks and how many positions it has. It should lock solidly and be easy to change between sets.

How much room do you need?

  • Adjustable bench with dumbbells: plan on a space of about 6 x 6 ft, so your arms clear the walls when you press and row.
  • Olympic bench with a barbell: about 9 ft wide and 7 ft deep.

Lifting in a smaller space? Read our guide to setting up a home gym in a condo or apartment. Whatever you choose, interlocking floor mats ($19.99 for 24 sq ft) protect the floor and stop the bench from sliding.

Lifting alone? Be careful with a barbell

The uprights on an Olympic bench hold the bar, but they won't catch it if you fail a rep. Without a spotter, stop a rep or two before you think you'd fail, and stick to a weight you know you can press. Dumbbells are safer here, since you can simply set them down. That's one more reason an adjustable bench and dumbbells suit people who train alone.

Common questions

Is an adjustable or flat bench better for a home gym?

For most people, adjustable. It also sets flat, and it adds incline and seated exercises. A flat bench only makes sense if the budget is very tight or you only do flat work.

Do I need an Olympic bench to bench press?

You need something that holds the bar: an Olympic bench with uprights, or a regular bench inside a rack. With only dumbbells, any sturdy bench will do.

Can I use an adjustable bench with a squat rack?

Yes, as long as it fits between the uprights. Measure the inside width of your rack and the width of the bench before you buy. Wheels make it much easier to roll in and out.

How much should I spend on a weight bench?

For home use, around $150 to $200 buys a solid steel bench. Spend more if you lift very heavy or want a commercial bench that will see daily use from several people.

Do benches come assembled?

Most come in a box and need some assembly, usually with basic tools. Call us if you want to check on a specific bench before you buy it.

Where can I buy a weight bench in Toronto?

We keep adjustable and Olympic benches at our North York store, with same-day pickup and local delivery across the GTA. Benches are heavy and bulky, so buying locally also saves on shipping.
