How to Choose a Dumbbell Rack: Vertical vs 3 Tier
Share
Once you own more than two or three pairs of dumbbells, they end up all over the floor. That's how toes get stubbed, floors get dented and you spend half your workout looking for the 25s. A rack fixes all of it. Here's how to pick the right one.
Start by counting your pairs
Count the pairs you own now, then add the ones you'll probably buy in the next year. Most people outgrow their first rack because they bought it for the set they had, not the set they ended up with.
Vertical racks: for small spaces
A vertical rack stands upright and holds each pair on its own arm, so it takes very little floor space. It's a good fit for condos, bedrooms and smaller sets.
- 5-pair dumbbell rack: $49.99. Light (9 lb) and compact.
- 6-pair dumbbell rack: $79.99. Sturdier (40 lb) and pairs well with our 5 to 30 lb dumbbell set, which is six pairs.
Vertical racks work best with light to medium dumbbells. If you're storing heavy pairs, ask us for the load rating before you buy and we'll confirm it from the manufacturer spec sheet.
3 tier racks: for a full set
A tiered rack holds dumbbells on angled shelves, so each pair faces you and lifts straight out. It's the setup you see in gyms. Our 3 tier dumbbell rack ($164.99) is:
- 52 inches wide, 25.6 inches deep and 37.4 inches tall
- Rated for 1,000 lb
- Heavy-duty powder-coated steel
It's the rack that comes with our 5 to 50 lb hex dumbbell bundle: ten pairs, 550 lb in total, so there's room left on the weight rating.
Measure your space first
Measure the wall where the rack will go, then leave room in front of it. You need space to step in, pick up a pair and step back without hitting anything. As a rough guide, a 3 tier rack needs about four and a half feet of wall and a couple of feet of clear floor in front.
Hex dumbbells store better
Round dumbbells can roll off shelves and racks. Hex dumbbells sit flat, which is one more reason most home gyms use rubber hex dumbbells.
Don't forget the plates
If you have a barbell too, a weight plate tree ($74.99) gets your plates off the floor and sorted by size.
Common questions
What size dumbbell rack do I need?
Count your pairs and add a little room to grow. Up to five or six pairs fit a vertical rack. A full set like 5 to 50 lb fits a 3 tier rack.
How much weight can a dumbbell rack hold?
It depends on the rack. Our 3 tier rack is rated for 1,000 lb. For our vertical racks, ask us and we'll confirm the rating from the spec sheet.
Do dumbbell racks need assembly?
Most do. For the 3 tier rack, leave the bolts loose until the whole frame is together, then tighten everything.
Where can I buy a dumbbell rack in Toronto?
We stock vertical and 3 tier racks at our North York store for same-day pickup, and we deliver across the GTA.
