Where to Buy Weight Plates in Toronto (Cast Iron from $1 a Pound)
Share
If you've got a barbell, plates are the next thing you need, and they're one of the easiest things to overpay for. Here's what to buy, what it should cost, and where to get it without paying to ship a few hundred pounds of iron.
What type of plates?
Quick version: cast iron is the cheapest, rubber coated is quieter and easier on floors, and urethane is the most durable. We compare all three in detail in rubber vs cast iron vs urethane plates. All of ours are Olympic plates with a 2 inch hole, so they fit any standard Olympic bar.
How many plates do you need?
For most people starting out, one pair of each size is plenty for a long time. Here's what that costs:
- Cast iron, a pair each of 45, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb: 175 lb of plates for $175.
- Rubber coated, a pair each of 45, 35, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 lb: 245 lb as our full rubber plate set for $299.99.
Add a 7 ft Olympic bar (44 lb, $89.99) and a pair of spring collars ($4.99) and you're ready to squat, bench and deadlift.
Don't skip the small plates
The 2.5 lb plates are the ones people forget, and they matter most once you've been lifting a while. A pair of 2.5s lets you add 5 lb to the bar instead of jumping 10 lb at a time, which keeps you making progress on presses and bench. Ours are $2.50 each in cast iron.
Buying for a commercial gym or studio?
Our urethane commercial plates are built for daily use in shared gyms: they don't smell, don't mark walls, and hold up to heavy use. If you need a larger quantity, call or text and we'll price the whole order.
Store them properly
Plates on the floor get kicked, rust faster in damp basements and garages, and are a tripping hazard. A plate tree keeps them in one place and off the ground.
